Song of the Day – 1/12/2011

Dizzee Rascal is a critically-acclaimed (and fucking badass) rapper from London, England. He’s the most well-known rapper from the “Grime” scene, a group of rhyme-sayers with a Jamaican-type sound who are heavily-influenced by beats that sound like cut up videogames and cellphone ringtones. It’s fresh, weird, electronic-y, and fun. He’s legit too; Diz won Britain’s prestigious Mercury Prize in 2003 for his debut album Boy in da Corner.

This song is a bit newer, and is a distinct turn from Diz’s usual direction in that it’s much more American…much more of what we might call “Gangsta.” And…it features Texas’ own UGK. I think this song has a great message…lots of people out there claiming to be “gangsta.” If there are so many criminals and villains out there, shouldn’t the world be overrun with bad guys already? Somebody’s lying…
